To the Cottesloe to take part in a debate on the play, Love the Sinner, with Colin Coward and Giles Goddard and Dolan Cummings in the chair. I've never been on stage at the National before and find myself 'acting' the part of a conservative because of the liberal balance of the rest of the panel. I speak up for Peter Akinola and, while not excusing the extremity of some of his comments on homosexuality, I try to explain the difficult context he worked in and which we in the West fail completely sometimes to understand. The play is worth seeing just for the first and final acts. The debate goes well but we come up with no answers. I'm not sure there are any. What a mess it all is.
